Barn Owl alert

I have received a report of a Barn Owl/s around the Spen valley greenway…

The last time I saw a Barn Owl near to our recording area was about 5 years ago at East Bierley.

I would be very interested if anyone has any other sightings or information of Barn Owls in that area.

Any information received will not be put on social media.

There is definitely a pair of Tawny Owls around Oakenshaw. I have the sound clips of both the male & female. I’m yet to see the barn owl but will definitely be looking out for it now.

      Hi Nicola
So sorry for the late reply..long story. Interesting about the Tawny Owls as I get them in Raw Nook NR but only now and then so these might be your birds moving. I have no over reports of Barn Owl sightings but if you do see one please let me know. Regards Martyn

Tonight I had the pleasure of having an owl fly over my head. Not sure which kind it was. This is the second time within the last week. It was about 22.15 by the Holy Trinity Church heading towards the golf links / toad hole beck. Before it was about the same time heading the same direction but I was higher up the estate.
I am hoping I will see it again.

      Hi Fay
      Thank you for your comment.
Your Owl is probably a Tawny Owl which has been seen and heard in and around the Raw Nook NR & TH Beck area.
Always lovely to see an owl. I suspect the species breeds locally (possible Odsal Wood) and uses our area to feed.
      Many thanks

For the past 18 months I’ve been regularly aware of owls in my area (between the Drop Kick and Harold Park) – hearing and seeing them. Last night I heard owls and saw a light coloured one and dark coloured one together in a nearby tree. There were there for a couple of hours from 1.30am before they flew off. I suspect they are the ones I hear/see regularly. Not sure if barn or tawny owls.

      Hi Lauren
      Sorry for the late reply.
Given the habitat at that location I think it fairly safe to say they will be Tawny Owls and probably a pair. Keep an eye out as they may have bred..which would be great.
      Many thanks for your sighting
      Regards
      Martyn
