New discovery at Low Moor Banks!

On the 16th of June I did some survey work at Low Moor Banks the old tip site on Dealburn road Low Moor.

I took my sweep net mainly looking for daytime moth species and butterflies.

Whilst sweeping at the bottom of the site I found in the net a Cricket species that I was unfamiliar with. I took some photos and moved on.

I then found another 4 Crickets all of the same species.

My now I was thinking they maybe Roesel’s Bush-cricket – Roeseliana roeselii. Doing research at home they were indeed that species, which is s site first!

The species is gradually moving north so I checked the meadow at Raw Nook LNR but with no luck.

On a more sad note I visited the regular orchid area at the top of the site. Firstly I didn’t find any Bee Orchids but even worst the area is vastly overgrown with Birch and Alder saplings. I only counted 22 SM Orchids in past years it has been over one hundred. I fear the Orchids will be lost from this area.
